Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology

Peking University (PKU) is one of the units which pioneers the research of Nanotechnology in China. In the September of 1997, PKU initiated the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology (CNST), which combined the research forces from the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering (CCME), School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science(EECS), School of physics(PHYS) and School of Life Science(SLS). And the public experimental platform for Nano Science and Technology  were enhanced greatly. PKU established “ Class for Nano Science and Technology” in 2003, which would enroll 20 graduate students for each year. In 2004, the “Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Nanodevice Physics and Chemistry” was set up. Additionally, CNST was firstly chosen into the “Model Groups for Creation” by Ministry of Education of the Chinese Government. After the establishment of the Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies in 2005, it was promoted gradually from a virtual research platform to a half-real half-empty research institute. Since the Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies could start on programs and recruit research faculties independently, a new period of great development for CNST occures.  In 2006, CNST became one of the research teams supported by Ministry of Education Fund. The interdiscipline of “Nano Science and Technology” was ratified “The Key Discipline in Beijing” in 2008. CNST currently possesses 1 Ministry of Education Key Laboratory, 1 public experiment base, and gets down to researches in 5 branches. What is more, CNST launches 23 programs, which cover subjects such as Chemistry, Physics, Electronics, Materials and Information Technology.

Now CNST has 27 research staff, including 18 professors, 6 associate professors and 3 engineers. All of them are doctors and 19 of them are doctoral supervisors. 10 research staff are jointly appointed professors in the Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies, 1 associate professor, 1 full-time research fellow and 1 engineer. In addition, there are 8 winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 4 recipients of the New Century Talent Fund, 3 Chief Scientist for National Nano Science and Technology Research Project, 1 innovative team and 1 Research Team for Surface Nano Engineering.
